Fergus Webber's Observation Banquit (fwob)

Time and price

I will look at a three websites and tell you how long I think they would take to make and how much in British pounds that would add up to. I think this will be useful for clients who aren't sure how much they should be paying for a website.

markboulton.co.uk

Well, there isn't a lot to this website design so I would say to make it from scratch would be about about a day. There is no logo really (see my good logo design post for more info Mark!) so cost wise I am guessing maybe £400 - £500 with a years hosting and a content managment system (unless he uses blogger of course) in which case he might trim it down to £300.

malarkey.co.uk

This one has just got a pad of A4 note paper from Woolworths and scanned it in so it wouldn't take long with that done. It might take a bit longer than mark's site though because of the photo's so maybe two days for this one and perhaps £600 - £800 with all of the above - maybe £500 if they use blogger for content management.

2advanced.com

Mark and Malarkey would do well to look at 2Advanced, it is very complex with nice graphics and some music on the site. This I would imagine took at least four days to make and to find the music loops from somewhere as well. I would say around £2,000 - £3,000 for this one and I don't think you could do this with Blogger so no price reduction there I am afraid!

Well I hope this is useful to you and you can use it in your meetings with clients to help make them understand the true value of websites.

Jesus this is the funniest most uninformed blog ever. The good logo design post was funny but this takes the biscuit. I hope to god that this blog is some kind of joke.

    Excellent!

I always thought Hicks in particularl was grossly overrated.

Looking forward to more of your excellent observations and insights Fergus!

How are you supposed to estimate how long a website would take to develop if you don't make them yourself. What the hell is "I don't think you could do this with Blogger so no price reduction there I am afraid!" supposed to mean. You can't compare a completely Flash based website to Malarkey and Mark Boulton's effort, of course the flash based one is going to be more "complex". You obviously have no concept of website design which is why your blog is such a good read.

I suppose I'm just as bad for commenting on these posts! Anyway keep up the good work ;)

Wow, you're almost as big of idiot as the Decloak Guy.

Lets do a critique of your website:

No logo, so I would say Hicks and Bowman has a better logo than you, an overwelming amount of gayness with all this pink, and a dull sense of humor and being a British lad I would of thought you could use proper grammar but I guess not.

And comparing 2advanced, an interactive media company that does strictly flash to a CSS standard compliant blog...are you joking? I don't know, maybe you are but either way it's not funny. You're just an asshat.

Well Fartpants you sure no hou two make an impression on your first day at work/blog.

As with others I only hope this blog is a wind up - bring on Jeremy Beadle! If you are serious, then take it from me you should stop now before you find a letter on your door mat inviting you to attend one of Her Maj's finest courthouses to defend yourself against a liable case, or something similar.

I'm just glad I found this site after 3 bottles of Stella and not more, else I may have been a little unforgiving in my tone and meaning: Pink boy ;-|

Good luck with what ever future your misguided life holds Doofus (did I get your name wrong at all?)

PS here is a handy lonk for you

I wasn't until I read the anonymous comments in this thread that I realised 'humour impairment' was a real condition. Jesus.

Yeah, okay I was suckered in to thinking this was serious *blushes*. Clearly I unwittingly disengaged 'humour mode' last night.
So with a renewed lust for what is right and wrong on the interweb I will return to Fergals blog at every opportunity, and hang on his every word!
Well done Teargas you had a few of us there ;)

As Kev said above, I can't believe some of the comments here.

Are people now so far removed from real, social interaction (as opposed to the Internet and SMS-enabled kind) that they can't spot a bit of tongue-in-cheek naughtiness when they see it? Evidently, some are.

I can only say that there are a few people who really ought to get out more, and actually talk to people face-to-face, and reacquaint themselves with the various linguistic, mental and physical nuances us humans evolved to communicate with over the last zillion years (humour being a major one).

Is it that we're all busy texting away with flipping iPods in our ears and typing on our bloody laptops (oh, sorry, Powerbooks) on the train that we have become divorced from the simplest of social skills?

Anyway, my resolution is to spend much more time in the pub and none at the bloody gym/cybercafe.

Sorry Fergus, I realise this is not the appropriate place for these kind of discussions, but really!

Why so many anonymous comments, what are you all scared off?

  • At 10:01 PM, Anonymous Slightly more humourous but still a moron said…

I think Fergis' comments got peoples backs (my own included) up because he was a wee bit too good at what he did/is doing! I am not even in a computer related job and am in fact in one of the most social industries going, but I still didn't see through this smoke screen of ignorance that he created. I think everyone has seen real posts like this before and maybe we just went on our gut instinct, rather than accepting maybe someone could do this with a sense of humus.
I am sitting here litereally blushing at my foolishness and I'm sure I'm not alone!
Well done Beergut, your round me thinks?

You truly are a Jerk. I have been visiting both Joshuaink and Hicksdesign for quite some time now, and must say that they are two of the best designed websites around. The "program lines" on Joshuaink are intentional to show boundaries and technique. And the flowers are great too. Even though he did not create the flowers he did code his entire blog, more than what can be said for you

As far as Hicksdesign, Jon is probably one of the most well-respected designers around, and his work inspires many. lay off

  • At 9:18 PM, Anonymous Anonymous said…

Zeerus, how can you say that about Joushuainc, who's the fool, Fergues uses a template which took hin minutes to set up wareas that Oxford bloke probably spent blumin weeks if not munths getting it to the award winning standard it is today, and then having the kick in the gonnads with everyone saying he dident do the bloody thing.

Hats off to Fergauhs saved loads of time GRHS.

  • At 11:03 PM, Blogger Zeerus said…

You must have misunderstood me. I am giving John credits for the hard work he put into his website. And he even states in the footer of his website that the flowers were not made by him. As far as Fergus, he has no right to comment on top notch websites when he cant even design his own blog. In case you don't know, this is a default blogger template.

Your analysis on 2Advanced is the funniest I have read in my life. First off, you stated that this site took 4 weeks to make and cost around 3,000. The reality is that this site took months, has cutting edge technology, such as a proprietary XML engine, and Eric Jordan is a musical genius that creates his own loops. Also bear in mind that 2Advanced has been named the most influential Web Design firm of the decade by Adobe. Do us a favor and quit misleading people.
